About

Bethany Skena is a contemporary landscape painter working with small and large scale paintings and is an Orlando, Florida native. She is working primarily in acrylic on canvas and paper and is pursuing a Masters of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting at the University of Central Florida, where she hopes to graduate in the spring of 2028.
Skena has exhibited her work in group shows including the Small Things Considered at Arts on Douglas in New Smyrna Beach, FL, Alliance For The Arts 40th Annual All Florida Exhibition in Fort Myers, FL. Her work reflects an interest in the emotional dualities of suburban spaces, engaging with ideas of home, memory, and belonging.

I am interested in moments suspended within mundane places. Neighborhoods I encounter in my daily life become spaces that are contemplative and fraught with emotions of contentment and unease and where a sense of absence often arises. The idea of home is a central theme within my work, where suburban settings can quietly stir memories or feelings of anxiety and loss, comfort and stability and the uncomfortable transition between them. Painting allows me to express these emotions through light, color, and stillness revealing unique associations tied to the environments we currently inhabit or remember. Elements like shifting light and foliage, a lit window, or the fleeting minutes of twilight allow me to explore how these spaces can stop and hold you within them. My hope is that viewers recognize the emotional tone embedded in these everyday moments and reflect on their own idea of home.
